Which folding phone is best for you?

During a ceremony on August 10, 2022, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, as well as the Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro and the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro.

The Z Fold 4 is a book-style folding phone, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, while the Z Flip 4 is a clamshell folding phone, similar to the Z Flip 3.

Design Z Fold 4 vs Z Flip 4

The design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is quite similar to that of its predecessor; examine the differences to the Z Fold 3 in our separate section. As a result, it features a book-like form with a vertical fold, an external display on the front, and three camera lenses on the back.

The rear camera lenses, like the 2021 gadget, are housed in a compact pill-shaped camera housing on the back, however the edges are slightly more inclined overall. When closed, the front display has a centred punch hole camera at the top, while the inner display has an under display camera.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is available in Gray Green, Beige, Burgandy, and Phantom Black, and it is compatible with the S Pen Fold Edition stylus, which is also available in these colors.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a clamshell device folding device with a horizontal fold, hence the design of these two handsets is radically different. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 sports a dual camera with an external display next to it, taking up slightly over a third of the back, similar to the Z Flip 3 – read our separate feature to see how it compares to its predecessor.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a punch hole camera at the top of the display, rather than an under-display camera. The normal color possibilities are Graphite, Bora Purple, Pink Gold, and Blue, however there are 75 color variations available through the Bespoke Edition.

The Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 both have squared off frames and IP water and dust resistance ratings. The two gadgets also offer Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection and shock resistance. However, the Z Flip 4 lacks S Pen capabilities.

Z Fold 4 vs Z Flip 4 display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a 6.2-inch external display and a 7.6-inch internal display. The internal display offers a wider and squarer screen than previously, and both the inner and outer display on the Z Fold 4 have a 120Hz refresh rate, though the internal has an adaptive refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz, while the external has between 48Hz and 120Hz.

In terms of specifications, the inner display is a Dynamic AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2176 x 1812 pixels and Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), as well as support for the S Pen Fold Edition, as previously stated. Meanwhile, the exterior display is a Dynamic AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2316 x 904 pixels and Always On Display technology.

When unfolded, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 sports a 6.7-inch main display and a 1.9-inch outer display. The main display has a Full HD+ resolution and an adaptive refresh rate of 1Hz to 120Hz, and it has a punch hole camera at the top of the screen, similar to what the Z Flip 3 had.

The exterior display has a resolution of 260 x 512 and more possibilities than its predecessor, bringing themes from the phone’s interior to the outside.

Z Fold 4 vs Z Flip 4 specs

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset powers both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Z Flip 4. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 comes with 12GB of RAM and storage options of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 offers a more modest 8GB of RAM and storage options of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a 4400mAh battery, whereas the Z Flip 4 has a 3700mAh battery. Keep in mind that, while smaller, the battery in the Flip 4 has a lot less work to do than the battery in the Fold 4, so keep that in mind. Both allow wireless charging and reverse wireless charging and give 25W wired charging with 50% battery charge in 30 minutes.

Both devices support 5G and have real fingerprint scanners rather than under-display choices.

Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 sports the same triple back camera as the Galaxy S22. That translates to a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor with 3x zoom. The front-facing camera is a 10-megapixel shooter, while the inner front camera is an upgraded under-display camera compared to the Z Fold 3, but it still has a 4-megapixel resolution.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 sports a dual rear camera with the same specifications as the Z Flip 3. As a result, there are two 12-megapixel sensors, one with a wide angle lens with an f/1.8 aperture and the other with an ultra wide-angle lens and an f/2.2 aperture. It has a 65 percent brighter Wide sensor than the Z Flip 3, but the pixel size has increased from 1.4m to 1.8m.

The Z Flip 4 includes a 10-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.4 aperture on the front.

Conclusion

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are two very distinct devices. The Z Fold 4 is substantially larger and designed for individuals who want a foldable with a larger screen when unfurled, whilst the Z Flip 4 is designed for those who want a standard screen when unfolded but in a smaller and more pocketable version when folded.

Both are powered by the same hardware, but the Z Fold 4 has more RAM and a more powerful camera system. It also works with the S Pen Fold Edition. Meanwhile, the Z Flip 4 is a solid device like its predecessor, but it is aimed at a different demographic than the Z Fold 4, and it is also less expensive.
