Apple introduces the M2 Pro and M2 Max

M2 Pro and M2 Max, which supercharge the MacBook Pro and Mac mini, have a more powerful CPU and GPU, up to 96GB of unified memory, and industry-leading power efficiency.

Apple today announced the M2 Pro and M2 Max, two next-generation SoCs (systems on a chip) that push Apple silicon’s groundbreaking power-efficient performance to new heights. M2 Pro expands on the M2 architecture to provide an up to 12-core CPU and up to 19-core GPU, as well as up to 32GB of rapid unified memory. M2 Max expands on M2 Pro’s capabilities, including an up to 38-core GPU, double the unified memory bandwidth, and up to 96GB of unified memory. Because of its industry-leading performance per watt, it is the most powerful and power-efficient chip for a professional laptop. Both CPUs include improved proprietary technology, such as a quicker 16-core Neural Engine and Apple’s strong media engine.M2 Pro brings pro performance to the Mac mini for the first time, while M2 Pro and M2 Max push the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro’s game-changing performance and capabilities even further.

“Only Apple manufactures SoCs such as the M2 Pro and M2 Max. “They give exceptional pro performance while maintaining industry-leading power efficiency,” said Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies, Johny Srouji. “The M2 Pro and M2 Max reflect astounding developments in Apple silicon, with an even more powerful CPU and GPU, support for a larger unified memory system, and an enhanced media engine.”

M2 Pro: Pro Workflow Performance of the Future.

M2 Pro has 40 billion transistors, which is roughly 20% more than M1 Pro and double the number in M2. It is built utilizing a second-generation 5-nanometer process technology. It has double the unified memory bandwidth of the M2 and up to 32GB of low-latency unified memory. The next-generation 10- or 12-core CPU has up to eight high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, resulting in up to 20% greater multithreaded CPU performance than the 10-core CPU in M1 Pro. Adobe Photoshop runs heavy workloads quicker than ever before, while Xcode compiles up to 2.5x faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Pro.

The GPU in the M2 Pro may be customized with up to 19 cores, which is three more than the GPU in the M1 Pro, and it has a larger L2 cache. Graphics speeds are up to 30% quicker than on the M1 Pro, resulting in significant boosts in image processing performance and the ability to play console-quality games.

M2 Max: The World’s Most Powerful and Efficient Pro Laptop Chip.

M2 Max pushes the performance and capabilities of Apple silicon even further, with 67 billion transistors — 10 billion more than M1 Max and more than three times that of M2. Its unified memory bandwidth of 400GB/s is twice that of the M2 Pro and four times that of the M2, and it supports up to 96GB of rapid unified memory. So large files open instantly, and working across various professional programs is amazingly fast and fluid.

The M2 Max has the same next-generation 12-core CPU as the M2 Pro. With up to 38 cores and a bigger L2 cache, the GPU is significantly more powerful. Graphics performance can be up to 30% quicker than M1 Max. Along with 96GB of RAM, the new MacBook Pro with M2 Max is capable of handling graphics-intensive projects that competitor systems are incapable of handling. 2 The MacBook Pro with M2 Max delivers exceptional performance whether plugged in or running on battery power, from powering visual effects to training machine learning models to stitching together gigapixel photographs. M2 Max is the world’s most powerful and efficient pro laptop chip.

Custom Technologies Expand Capabilities.

M2 Pro and M2 Max have new unique technologies:

Apple’s next-generation, 16-core Neural Engine, capable of 15.8 trillion operations per second and up to 40% quicker than the previous generation, is included in both the M2 Pro and M2 Max.
M2 Pro’s media engine is extremely strong and efficient, with hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, and ProRes video encoding and decode, enabling for the playing of multiple streams of 4K and 8K ProRes video while using very little power. M2 Max has two video encode engines and two ProRes engines, allowing for up to twice the video encoding speed of M2 Pro.
Apple’s latest image signal processor reduces noise and, in conjunction with the Neural Engine, employs computational video to improve camera image quality.
A next-generation Secure Enclave is an essential component of Apple’s world-class security.

M2 Pro and M2 Max on macOS Ventura.

macOS was built for Apple silicon, and the combination of macOS Ventura with industry-leading new CPUs provides users with unrivaled performance and productivity. Apple silicon-powered Mac computers have access to over 15,000 native software and plug-ins that unlock the full capability of M-series CPUs.

macOS Ventura introduces new features such as Stage Manager, as well as new Continuity Camera and FaceTime Handoff capabilities. macOS Ventura also features significant changes to Safari, Mail, Messages, Spotlight, and other applications, making them more snappy and efficient on M2 Pro and M2 Max.

The Environment and Apple Silicon.

M2 Pro and M2 Max assist the new MacBook Pro and Mac mini in meeting Apple’s stringent energy saving requirements. Apple silicon’s power-efficient efficiency enables the new MacBook Pro to achieve the greatest battery life ever in a Mac — up to 22 hours. 3 As a result, it requires less time to be plugged in and consumes less energy over its lifetime.

Apple is currently carbon neutral for global corporate operations and aims to have a net-zero climate impact throughout the whole organization by 2030, including manufacturing supply chains and all product life cycles. This means that every chip produced by Apple, from design to production, will be carbon neutral.
